The first meal I made on our Daniel fast this week was this super easy Vegetable Soup. All I did was chop up a lot of veggies (about 8 cups worth), added some seasoning and spices, some diced tomatoes and water. I had some ready-made brown rice, so I added about 1/3 cup of brown rice to each bowl and poured the soup on top. I was afraid it would be rejected by certain small members of the family, but everyone had their favorite veggies that made the soup delicious to them. Sofia loved the carrots, peppers and celery. Grace loved the potatoes and carrots. For the hubby and me, fresh spinach was added to the bowl prior to pouring in the soup. The hot soup was just the right temperature to gently wilt the spinach and by the time we sat down, it was the perfect texture.
Making this simple soup and thinking about the foods we are giving up really make me feel clean and healthy. It’s such a good thing to detox both mentally and physically. It’s hard to go through the first few days of a detox. Giving up the caffeine, sugar and all kinds of preservatives and horrible stuff we feed our bodies day after day…it’s a good practice to cleanse the tummy every once in a while. And the headaches – it just goes to show that we are addicted to sugar and caffeine. Read Daniel 1. Daniel and the other men with him who fasted for 10 days with just vegetables were stronger and healthier than the other men who continued to eat the royal food.
It also makes me realize that simple is okay. We don’t need fancy meals every day – or fancy flavors to eat. It’s fun to eat for entertainment sometimes, or just to appreciate different foods. But when you give up the normal foods you’re used to eating and do away with all the heaviness that is common to feel after eating, one thing that might help is to do what I do, which is to remind myself of this simple fact: “I will eat again in a few hours.” It’s crazy to realize how easy it is to overeat in our society. However, eating only vegetables in this hearty soup with all natural ingredients is very satisfying.
On another note….Mamas, if you’re looking for a good devotional, go to the Bible app. Lysa TerKeurst wrote a 5-day Bible Reading plan called “No More Unglued Mama Mornings.” I mean, the title alone will preach! On day 1, she references the verse from Proverbs 10:14, “The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.” She goes on to say, “We have to start our day by exchanging whispers with God before shouts with the world….Even if it’s only for a few minutes, I have to store up some knowledge from the Word of God first thing.”
Let’s stop coming unglued, Moms. Let’s do it….or what I really mean to say is …Let’s NOT do it! Come unglued, that is. And all with a side of Vegetable Soup!
